BC charity: water started in 2012, when a group of students realized the severity of the water crisis and how much it deserved our attention. The facts are truly shocking. 783 million people do not have access to clean water and almost 2.5 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation. Diseases from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation kill more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Children are especially vulnerable, as their bodies aren't strong enough to fight diarrhea, dysentery and other illnesses. 90% of the 30,000 deaths that occur every week from unsafe water and unhygienic living conditions are in children under five years old. The WHO reports that over 3.6% of the global disease burden can be prevented simply by improving water supply, sanitation, and hygiene.
The water crisis is vast, and there are many charities that aim to solve the problem. However, charity: water is unique for a couple of key reasons. It follows a 100% model, which means that all public donations to the organization go straight to work in field. All overheard costs like salaries and office rent are covered by private donors. In addition, charity: water allows its donors and campaigners to see exactly which village or which drilling rig their money went towards funding. In fact, 18 months after a campaign is finished, GPS coordinates, photos, and details about the communities that were helped are sent to everyone who contributed to the campaign.
In the mere couple of years since its inception, BC charity: water has been able to raise thousands of dollars and fund the development of a drilling rig and wells in two different villages. Specific information on the drilling rig and wells that we helped fund can be found here.
